Sewer Utility Division

The Borough owns, operates, maintains, and repairs a sewerage treatment facility, collection system, and sewerage pumping stations that service residences, business and commercial facilities within the Borough’s 7.6 square mile borders. The Borough’s sewerage system consists of 1 main treatment facility that operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with a design flow of 1.4 MGD, along with 7 sewerage pumping stations, and 30 miles of sewer collection pipes.

Sanitary Sewer Backups:

It is the property owner's responsibility to keep the sewer lateral clear and if there is a backup they have to clear the lateral. This includes the entire length of the sewer lateral from the house to the sewer main, regardless of if a portion of the lateral is in the street. It is the Borough's responsibility to clear a backup in the sewer main located in the street (or an easement).

If a backup in the main line is suspected, call 973-377-7050 between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. After Hours call the Florham Park Police Department at 973-377-2200. The Borough will not clear private sewer lateral backups, and those issues should be referred to a qualified professional such as a plumber.

Fats, Oils, and Grease:

Fats, oils, and grease should be disposed of in your household garbage, not through the sink or toilet. These can quickly cause clogs in your sanitary sewer lateral. Learn more about Fats, Oils, and Grease in our FOG Brochure.pdf.

Wipes clog pipes!

No wipes are flushable. When you flush wipes, they clog your sewer lateral and our pumps. Fines may apply if you continually flush wipes and cause damage to the sanitary sewer system. Curious about what happens when you flush wipes? Read more here.

Planning to demolish a building or build a new structure?

If you plan to demolish a house, you must cap the sewer line and have it inspected. Inspections must be schedule a minimum of 24 hours in advance by calling (973) 377-1330.  A second inspection is required when the sanitary sewer lateral is re-connected.

Requests cannot be made day of inspection. At the time of request, please be prepared to provide:

-Name of property owner

-Name of contractor

-Email and phone for onsite contact

-Contact information for person responsible for payment

-Date and time for inspection

In most cases, re-connection invoices will be sent within 3 business days of the inspection. The invoice is your proof of successfully capping. The reconnection fee must be paid prior to the issuance of permits.

Please read our 2024 Sewer Reconnection Requirements.pdf  for more information about capping and reconnection procedures.

At the re-connection inspection, the completed Field Location of House Sewer Connection Form must be provided to the Sewer Utility. The form must be completed on the template and all necessary measurements, depths, etc., are to be included.

If you are connecting an existing property to the sanitary sewer system, please complete this application to apply for connection.

If you are altering the use of an existing space, expanding an existing space, or building a new commercial facility, please complete this application and submit with all necessary attachments and fees.

Sump pumps may not be connected to the sanitary sewer system

Borough ordinance specifically prohibits the connection of sump pumps to the sanitary sewer system. Residents should read Ordinance 23-21 for further information.
