2024 Fire Hydrant Flushing Program

The Water Department will be conducting their annual hydrant flushing program beginning Wednesday, October 23, 2024, from 9:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. The program will take approximately three weeks to complete. This is part of our continuous efforts to improve water quality to our customers. It also serves the following purposes:

  • It flushes sediments from mainline pipes.
  • It verifies the proper operation of the fire hydrants.

What should I do when the Borough crews are flushing in my area?

If you see a Borough crew flushing a hydrant on your street, avoid running tap water and using the washing machine or the dishwasher until the flushing has been completed. If you see hydrant flushing crews working in the area, please drive carefully and treat them like any other road construction crew.

What should I do after hydrant flushing?

  • If tap water is used during flushing, it could come out full of sediment or brown and may cause discoloration. If you encounter discolored water, shut the water off and wait several minutes. After waiting, check the clarity by running COLD water for a few minutes which will allow new water to work its way into your pipes. Try to run water at the lowest point in your house. If the water is clear, it is okay to use. If not, wait a few more minutes and check again. In some cases, there may be slight discoloration for a few hours. The discoloration only affects the appearance of the water, but it does not affect the water quality. Avoid using hot water until the water is clear.
  • Avoid washing laundry during scheduled flushing times. Wait until the water runs clear at the tap; then, wash a load of dark clothes first.
  • If pressure or volume seems low, check your faucet screens for trapped particles.
  • After flushing, clean your faucet strainers to avoid sediment build up.

Residents can expect some discoloration of the water for a short period of time (few hours) after flushing. It is not harmful to your health, and this condition can be remedied by allowing the water to run until clear.

If you have any questions or problems, please call (973) 410-5471. Thank you for your cooperation.
